Inspiring children and youth through STEAM and LEGO® education programs

FIRST LEGO League is a global program that introduces Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) to children through fun and exciting hands-on learning using didactic materials and LEGO Education Sets. The aim of the program is to bring together primary and secondary school students interested in science, who, through formed school teams, participate in the thinking and creative process of creating an innovative project, programming robots and presenting the results. Participants gain real-world problem-solving experience through a guided global robotics program, helping students and teachers build a better future together.

Through preparations for the competition, creativity, team spirit and cooperation among young people are developed and independence for future actions is also encouraged. This program helps youth to become the main support for innovation in society, and enables them to develop their professional potentials primarily in the fields of science and technology.

FIRST LEGO League is launched by FIRST Organization and LEGO Group. FIRST Organization was established in 1989, so it could encourage respect towards science and technology among youth. LEGO Group develops children’s creativity through games and learning. Based on world-known LEGO bricks, the company provides more than 130 countries with toys for children.

The theme of the FIRST® LEGO® League program for the 2023/24 season is called MASTERPIECESM. The focus is on finding innovative solutions for creating and communicating art around the world.

Applications for Season 2024/25 are closed.

Divisions

FIRST® LEGO® League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children ages 4-16 through fun, exciting, hands-on learning. From Discover, to Explore, and then to Challenge, students will understand the basics of STEM and apply their skills in an exciting competition while building habits of learning, confidence, and teamwork skills along the way. Students can begin their FIRST LEGO League journey with the Discover program and progress through Explore and Challenge. Children may also join any division based on their age. In Serbia, Challenge and Explore programs are being organized.

First Lego League Challenge logo

Friendly competition is at the heart of Challenge, as teams of students ages 9-16 engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering – building and programming a LEGO® Education SPIKE Prime or LEGO MINDSTORMS® robot that navigates the missions of a Robot Game. As a part of the Challenge program, teams create their own innovative solutions for real – world problems that are connected to the current season’s theme.

First Lego League Explore Logo

In Explore, teams of students ages 6-10 focus on the fundamentals of engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn to design, and code, and create unique solutions made with LEGO bricks. Robots that are being used for this program are SPIKE Essential or WeDo 2.0.

First Lego League Discover Logo

This playful introductory STEM program ignites the natural curiosity of children ages 4-6 and builds their habits of learning with hands-on activities in the classroom and at home using LEGO® DUPLO® bricks.
